Lake Norman Boating: Educate Yourself on Safety
Every year, thousands of Lake Norman boating enthusiasts take to the water to fish, sail, water ski and pursue their vessel-based recreations. To ensure the safety of the public, the Wildlife Resources Commission enforces laws and regulations that we all must observe.
One of these laws require all boat operators 26 years old and younger to complete an NASBLA-approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 hp or greater. By completing and passing this safety course, you will be certified to navigate the waters of North Carolina and any other state where a safety course is required.
You can complete the course online, or you can attend an instructor-led course, which is taught by wildlife officers throughout the year. The course covers the basics of boating, as well as laws and safety practices. An exam follows the course, and you must receive a passing grade to receive a boater education card.

Vessel operators who are required to have a boater education card must carry it on board and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer. If you are caught without at boater education card, you will be fined.
Even though the law requires anyone younger than 27 to complete a safety course, many boaters take the boat safety course in order to save on their PWC or boat insurance. There is no minimum age to take the exam.
