Lake Norman Fishing: Tips From Westport Marina

Charlotte is full of Lake Norman fishing enthusiasts. The issue most fishermen face is finding the best place on the lake to cast their line. Unfortunately, there are no locations that are sure to be full of fish year-round. Their locations can change each hour! Knowing their swimming patterns and tendencies can be the difference between coming back with a prize catch or docking empty-handed.

Water Temperature

In general, the fish you’re after are going to want to be in cooler water. During the summer months, fish tend to move to the deeper water in the middle of the lake to beat the intense heat. That means during the early spring and fall months, they will be located a little closer to shore in the shallow water.

What Time is it?

Think about your eating patterns – you most likely eat the most when you wake up and at the end of your day. Fish operate very similarly. Fish will be on the hunt for food around one hour before and after sunrise and one hour before and after sunset. Of course, it will still be possible to catch a fish snacking in the middle of the day, so don’t give up!

Look for Calm Waters

Fish feel more comfortable in areas where the water is still or only slightly rippling. Be aware of what the water is doing where you are casting a line. If it is a very windy day or if a water skier recently zoomed through this area, the water will be more turbulent.

Once I Catch it, can I Keep it?

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has regulations regarding the minimum size limit a fish must be if you want to keep it. If the fish does not meet this requirement, you must throw it back.

  • Crappie: 8” minimum
  • Largemouth, Smallmouth & Spotted Bass: 14” minimum
  • Striped & Bodie Bass: 16” minimum
  • Walleye: 15” minimum
  • All other types: No set minimum
