Paddleboard and Boat Rentals on Lake Norman
Over the past few years, paddleboarding has become very popular in the U.S. In fact, a 2013 Outdoor Foundation recreation report claimed that paddleboarding was one of the fastest growing outdoor activities, especially for first-time participants. It attracted 56-percent of the newbies among all outdoor activities last year. To keep up with the growing love of this water sport, Westport Marina is now providing paddleboards to their already impressive line of boat rentals on Lake Norman.
You’ve probably seen them, a hybrid of a surfboard and kayak where the rider stands up on the long board and uses a paddle to move and steer in the water. The appeal is easy to understand: it’s simple, fun for all ages and can be done anywhere there is a body of water – fresh or saltwater.
It may seem new, but paddleboarding has been around for a long time. Ancient Hawaiians used them as transpiration between islands for fishing, and fisherman from Asia and South America have used them to trap fish. Since then, the equipment has obviously changed. They average 10 to 12-feet in length and are contoured to make balancing easy. These changes make it easy for almost anyone to ride – not just surfers or swimmers. With the paddleboards at Westport Marina and the scerene waters of Lake Norman, first-timers can usually get the hang of it and start paddling rather quickly.
